Rules no longer recommend it, and Outlook rules no longer apply
it.
Documents that already carry it keep it. The label stays in the
policy, so endpoints still recognise it and apply its restrictions.
Use this to retire a label temporarily or for good without losing
the mapping of existing documents.
Deleting a label
Click the bin on the label card.
Read the confirmation. It lists everything else that changes:
N classification rule(s) recommending it will be removed:
…
N Outlook mail rule(s) applying it will be removed
it will be removed from N screen watermark rule(s). A
screen watermark rule left without labels is removed.
It ends with: Files previously marked with this label will be
treated as unlabeled. To only disable it, turn off the Enabled switch
instead of Delete.
Click OK, then Publish &
Sign.
The default label cannot be deleted. The console
says: This label is the enforcement DEFAULT label. Pick a different
default under Rules → General Enforcement first, then delete this
label.
After deletion, documents stamped with the label are
unlabeled on every endpoint. They show up in
unlabeled-file warnings (if enabled), and saving or sending them follows
the unlabeled-content rules.
The audit record of the publish lists Label deleted:
